Elias lönnrot is a Finnish linguist, folklorist, collector and compiler of the Karelian-Finnish epos "Kalevala".
Each year, the twenty-eighth of February in the Republic of Karelia and Finland are celebrating the Day of "Kalevala". It was this day in 1835, the Finnish folklorist Elias lönnrot (1802-1884) signed his Preface to the first edition of "Kalevala". In 1849, after fourteen years of hard work, E. lönnrot published an expanded and final version of the poem — so in world literature came in the Karelian-Finnish folk epic. For a meaningful and poetic merits of "Kalevala" put on a par with the Scandinavian "Edda", the German "Nibelungenlied" and even Greek "iliadou". Under the influence of the Kalevala on the romantic wave of the XIX century born American "the Song of Hiawatha" and the Estonian epos "Kalevipoeg". Themselves as Karelians and Finns revered the Kalevala as a national Shrine.
