Eugene Sue. Collected works in 18 volumes. Gift books bound in leather
Marie-Joseph Sue (this is the real name of the writer, he will take the name "Eugene" later as a literary pseudonym – as a sign of attention to his godfather) was born in the family of a doctor. His father, Jean-Baptiste Sue, in the few years following the Great Revolution, made a dizzying career: from an ordinary doctor he turned into the chief physician of the imperial guard, a personal friend of Napoleon, and after the Bourbon Restoration – into a royal doctor and a member of the Medical Academy. But in 1804, the fall of Napoleon is still far away, and the baby Marie-Joseph will receive brilliant godparents: Josephine Beauharnais (soon turned from the wife of the first consul into the empress), and Napoleon's stepson Eugene Beauharnais (the future prince).
