The novel reflects a difficult period of Russian history, when the Murmansk Railway was formed and the Arctic Ocean flotilla was created. The heroic Arctic Fleet was later born from this region. The Russian Cruiser Askold began its service in the Arden operation, but entered the revolutionary events already with the Northern Fleet. Most of the work is devoted to the fight against foreign interference in Murmansk and Arkhangelsk. For the novel "Out of the Dead End", Valentin Pikul was awarded the USSR Ministry of Defense Prize for 1987.
