The outstanding military writer and statesman A. N. Mikhailovsky-Danilevsky was in the thick of the events of the Patriotic War of 1812, being an aide-de-camp to Prince Kutuzov.
"Description of the Patriotic War" was created by him in 1834-40 by the Highest order of Emperor Nicholas I, when he held the position of senator and head of the military censorship committee. This large-scale work became the first Russian official history of 1812.
