"The History of a City" is one of the most famous works of the remarkable Russian satirist writer M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889). The novel tells the story of the fictional city of Glupov for almost a hundred years. Turning to fiction and the grotesque, Saltykov-Shchedrin described the morals and life of the "stupid people" and created a whole gallery of successive Stupid mayors, behind whose funny and sometimes scary images the rulers of the Russian state, its past and present are guessed.
