Valentin Savvich Pikul — Russian Soviet writer, author of numerous literary works on historical and Maritime topics. The total circulation of books during the writer's life was about 20 million.

In the novel, V. S. Pikul, "the Battle of iron chancellors" reflect the intricate pattern of Russian-German relations at the time of a severe European political crisis of 1850—1870х years when chancellors from the different parties was Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov and Otto von Bismarck. Gorchakov, according to Pikul, "the last student of the Pushkin pleiad and the last Chancellor of the Grand Empire." Bismarck completed the unification of Germany, never was a friend of our country, but as a sensible politician warned the Germans, "that any attempted conquest of Russia over their tomb". Germany, argued, Bismarck, "the invincible until then, we are not faced with Russia, in which the chest beats two hearts — Moscow and Petersburg".
