Laughter is a serious matter. This means that a writer who takes up a funny topic is obliged to approach his work seriously. Otherwise, it will not be funny. Among the domestic masters of laughter, and there are actually a few of them (Chekhov, Zoshchenko, Ilf and Petrov, plus a dozen more names), the name of Arkady Averchenko occupies one of the places of honor.
