The book is a detailed study of the initial period of the history of the Russian Railways and its main character - a steam locomotive in the least studied period of the emergence, formation and development of this mode of transport. The author has collected and systematized information, statistical data on the construction, operation, numbering locomotives of Russian Railways, took the so-called 'normal' track gauge (1524 mm) on all Russian Railways in the period 1837 to 1890. Many illustrations are provided from archives and private collections, published for the first time.
