Konstantin Petrovich Pobedonostsev is one of the most influential officials in Russian history, was the mentor of two tsars, had a gloomy reputation as a strangler of freedom and at the same time was ready to sacrifice himself in the name of the triumph of his ideas. He developed church schools, spent large sums on charity, and was intimately acquainted with many prominent scientists, writers, and artists.
