The current criminal code of the Russian Federation was adopted by the State Duma on 24 may 1996, approved by the Federation Council 5 June 1996, signed by the President June 13, 1996 and entered into force on 1 January 1997, replacing the RSFSR criminal code of 1960 applied until then.
